Things Are Looking Up in China

I am finally starting to find my groove in China. I have awesome tripmates of all ages from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, England and the US. There are 15 of us and we all seem to click pretty well.
Monday we visited the Great Wall and although I took a cable car up, walking down made me very stiff and sore. It was a really cool thing to see trailing up the top of the hilltops. Great experience and a beautiful day! After that, myself and a few others went to explore the Temple of Heaven Park and the Pearl Market. The Temple of Heaven was nice and had a huge park to stroll around. The Pearl Market was a lot like a decent sized flea market, but nothing caught my eye. Later that night, Alex, Kate and I went to find the Snack Street where there are lots of unique (translation gross) treats on sticks like scorpions and starfish. After wandering around for awhile we finally found it. By that time I was exhausted and starving and was not about to eat anything on Snack Street. So I was a bad traveller and ate KFC. It wasn't even white meat chicken which was disappointing ( I know, I know Matt Bauer - not all countries eat white meat chicken.) I finally wandered home.
Tuesday we spent at the Forbidden City which was pretty interesting. The rock garden at the end was the coolest part I thought. We also visited Tian'an Men Square prior to the Forbidden City which was somewhat unexciting. A few of us ended up going to lunch at a pizza place ( I know, I know - bad traveller again.) Then I came back for a nap. Last night we went to a Peking Duck dinner which was fantastic! Our tour guide ordered several dishes for us and it was delicious. I even had a local Beijing beer which went perfectly with the food. Several of us headed out to a local club area for a few drinks. It was nice to just relax and have some good conversation and a few laughs.
Today a group of us headed to the Silk Market for shopping while others went to the Summer Palace. I got some new socks, a foot massage and ... are you ready... a Balenciaga bag!!! I feel so classy now with my designer watch and handbag!
Now we are preparing ourselves for a 14 hour overnight train ride to Shanghai. That should be interesting! I will touch base later!

  1. Yay! Glad to see that Megan's got her groove back. And it's always nice to have fun travel buddies. Matt will shake his head disapprovingly but I, too, prefer white meat chicken. Post somes pics of the great wall (and that fancy-schmancy handbag, eh?).
    P.S. Happy birthday, Bre!
